Unit converter

Converts structural quantities between US customary and SI units with exact factors. Choose the quantity, enter the value, and pick the unit to convert from and to; the results also list the value in every other unit of the quantity.

Inputs of the unit converter

  • Quantity: length, area, force, moment, stress and pressure, line load, area load, unit weight (force per volume: pcf, kN/m³), density (mass per volume: lb/ft³, kg/m³), speed, moment of inertia, section modulus, temperature.
  • Value and the From and To units of that quantity.

Unit weight and density are different quantities: a unit weight of 1 pcf is a density of 1 lb/ft³ only under standard gravity, so they are kept apart.

RowBasis
Conversion basisNIST SP 811 (2008) Appendix B: 1 in = 0.0254 m, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg and gn = 9.80665 m/s² are exact, so 1 lbf = 4.4482216152605 N, 1 kgf = 9.80665 N; 1 mi = 5280 ft, 1 acre = 43,560 ft², 1 knot = 1852 m/h; the step shows both units in the SI base unit and the factor
TemperatureThrough kelvin: 0 °C = 273.15 K, 0 °F = 459.67 °R, 1 °F = 5/9 K (an offset, not a factor)
Round tripThe result converts back to the entered value
Value is physicalA temperature below absolute zero is NOT FEASIBLE

The ton is the short ton (2000 lbf); the tonne-force is the metric 1000 kgf.

Limitations

  • Results are shown to six significant figures; the factors are exact to double precision.
  • Mass, energy, power and angle are not offered.
